An excerpt from the September 24, 2014, edition of the Wall Street Journal:

Sherri Mitchell, co-founder of All About People, a Phoenix staffing and recruiting franchiser, says young employees sometimes need coaching to understand when excuses cross the line. Several years ago, the company hired a talented 23-year-old recruiter who offered a lot of excuses for frequent absences from work, ranging from problems with her boyfriend to a lack of sleep, Ms. Mitchell says. Eventually, Ms. Mitchell issued an ultimatum: “You’re amazing when you’re here, but you’re simply not meeting our needs,” adding that she had to start showing up reliably or lose her job.
